Beer Culture with Des de Moor
Des de Moor, one of Britain’s liveliest beer writers, has finally launched his own beer website, Beer Culture (www.desdemoor.co.uk). The site’s mission is to promote an international beer culture that recognises and celebrates beers of quality, distinctiveness and local character, brewed with care and passion.
Des has contributed bottled beer reviews to CAMRA publications What’s Brewing and BEER since 2002. He was a regular writer for the much-missed Beers of the World and has been a member of judging panels for several beer competitions. He’s a contributor to the book 1001 Beers You Must Try Before You Die.
The blog-style site will eventually comprise a complete archive of Des’s distinctive beer reviews, with full tasting notes and entertaining and insightful background sketches of a range of world beers. But there’s new material too – the site goes live with Des’s 30 Top Tastings of 2009, from extra low gravity cask bitters to Californian 10%+ monsters, and sour Flemish “cereal wine” to Glaswegian Dunkels. There’s also a report on the Manchester Winter Ales Festival with a trio of tastings.
“The beer review is an underrated literary form,” laughs Des. “I started writing up tasting notes years ago for the Oxford Bottled Beer Database website and found myself going off into digressions on the breweries and the beer styles. With my regular writing for CAMRA the reviews have become more and more compressed, and it was a delight to pick and write about 30 great beers without the restrictions of the regular column. I never found myself stuck for something to say!”
While the beer reviews form the backbone of the site, also planned are new and previously published features, retailer spotlights, news and comment, and translations from the Dutch-language beer press. Thoughtful beer drinkers will be delighted to see Des de Moor joining the online community of top beer writers with his insightful and entertaining work.
ENDS.
