Can the IPA be post-colonial?

More than any other beer style, the India Pale Ale (IPA) has come to define the modern, global craft beer movement. This event will highlight how IPA’s association with Britain’s colonial past makes it, from a social and cultural perspective, also one of the most problematic.

Chaired by Guild member and director David Jesudason, a panel of independent speakers will discuss IPA’s place in today’s society. The panel includes:

  • Steve Sailopal, founder Good Karma Beer Co
  • Ruvani de Silva, beer writer
  • Vinny Rosario, head brewer at Moonwake
  • Anja Madhvani, Food and drink writer & Cloudwater
  • Arup Chatterjee, historian and author of Indians in London
  • Dr Sam Goodman, Associate professor in English and Communication at Bournemouth University

Specifically, the event aims to address how IPA’s history, combined with the romanticisation of Britain’s colonial past and the idealisation of “empire” as a premiumising marketing strategy can represent a barrier for marginalised groups.

The aim is to assess IPA’s place in a modern, post-colonial world and suggest potential solutions to ensure that the style’s widespread popularity is used as an educational opportunity to foster inclusivity within the industry rather than as an obstacle to minority groups.

This event is open to Guild members only.  To RSVP, contact secretary@beerguild.co.uk.

All attendees will be sent the Zoom link the day before the event.
