What is the one thing you'd like to tell visitors to the Guild's website?
I have been writing about beer from the consumer perspective for nearly 40 years and have followed the beer revolution from its shaky inception in the 1970s to the present dizzying and chaotic successes. My Good Beer Guide Belgium gained notoriety for its refusal to poor praise on the ordinary and The World Atlas of Beer, now available in 10 languages, aims to be the definitive guide to the best in global brewing. They both win prizes with some frequency.
What you can offer as a writer/beer lover?
A strong understanding of the British, European and global beer movement from wee heavy at Traquair House in 1965 to smoked porter on Svalbard in 2017. I am a member of the Executive of the European Beer Consumer Union, completely independent from industry influences and know a lot more than I should about what is really going on in the global beer scene at Government, macro-economic, beer designing, stock-seeking and consumer preference levels. I am available for consulting, conferences and serious beer events.
What do you like most about being a Guild of Beer Writers member?
Networking with interesting people. We are a broad church but among our congregation are many of the people responsible for making happen the UK’s two beer revolutions of the past 50 years.
