  • Adnams recognised for its pioneering sustainability agenda
  • Carbon savings, waste reduction, 100% renewable electricity and new organic and recycled products all celebrated

Adnams, the Suffolk-based brewer and distiller, has been awarded the prestigious edie Sustainability Leaders Award for the groundbreaking work undertaken by its Environmental Sustainability Manager, Ben Orchard. The award celebrates a five-year, trail-blazing sustainability programme that has delivered clear commercial benefits and been so successful it has been adopted by other organisations.

The esteemed panel of judges noted initiatives that included changing Adnams’ Spindrift bottle from blue to brown glass, which generated a 21% carbon reduction and saved the company more than £25,000 annually. The transformation of Adnams’ waste management, resulting in zero waste now sent to landfill, and the sourcing of 100% renewable electricity for Adnams’ business operations, were also applauded.

Overall, Orchard has delivered carbon savings equivalent to another five years’ operations and has reduced Adnams’ water ratio to well below the industry average. A holistic sustainability strategy has also seen biodiversity promoted in Adnams’ hotels through honey made with the company’s own 250,000 bees, as well as its hotels achieving gold status in the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Judges comment: “This was an exceptional entry. An entry focused on achievements, output and results, this was a clear winner in its category.”

Ben Orchard, Environmental Sustainability Manager at Adnams, comments: “I’m honoured to have received this prestigious accolade and delighted that Adnams’ commitment to running a sustainable, honest and transparent business is leading the way as well as helping other organisations and the wider industry as a whole. All Adnams employees have helped the sustainability team achieve these great results and we look forward to new challenges and achievements in 2018.”

Andy Wood, Chief Executive at Adnams, comments: “Adnams is dedicated to a progressive and innovative sustainability agenda. This is good for the environment and good for business. Ben’s approach means our sustainability agenda is linked with the finance department and enables a holistic approach to environmental management that has seen real financial benefits. He has introduced an environmental framework that focused on carbon, waste, water and biodiversity that means our suppliers, partners and internal teams are all working together to achieve a common goal to make real sustainable change in the industry.”

The awarding body, edie, has been the market-leading information resource driving sustainability in business for nearly 20 years. It is an integral part of the UK’s largest multi-platform portfolio of sustainability information and resources.
