Alcohol Information Partnership comment on alcohol and diabetes research

Commenting on research in published in Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) about the relationship between alcohol and diabetes Dave Roberts Director General of the Alcohol Information Partnership said

“This report demonstrates the complex relationship between alcohol consumption and health.  The data from multiple studies suggests that moderate consumption of alcohol may be associated with certain health benefits for some adults, including a protective effect against cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  However we do not recommend that anyone drink alcohol for its potential health benefits – for adults who do choose to drink, it is important to drink in moderation.

Recent UK government data suggests the vast majority of people who choose to drink alcohol heed that advice and do so in moderation and within the Chief Medical Officers low risk guide lines.”
