Message to Guild Members from Tim Webb
In the first half of June 2025 I will be driving around the ring road of Iceland, visiting the 15 or 16 breweries that are found there. It is not a sponsored event, it’s a personal trip, designed to satisfy my curiosity about one of the most spectacular coastal, volcanic and desert landscapes on the planet, and the only European beer culture to be virtually free of influence from the major brewers (though we should be visiting one owned by Coca-Cola).
I am looking for three (or seven or eleven) companions on the trip, to share the costs, the driving and the experience. This invitation is being extended to the members of the British Guild of Beer Writers; the North American Guild of Beer Writers; and senior officers of the European Beer Consumers Union.
The 9-night, 10-day, 1600-mile road trip will cost in the region of UK£ 1250-1300 per person, including pre-booked accommodation, vehicle rental and fuel, but not travel to/from Iceland, or the cost of any stay in the capital Reykjavík, which is home to an additional four or five breweries.
I am hoping the destination will appeal, as much for the beer as the opportunity to join beer-focussed colleagues from elsewhere. The route has been compiled with help from consumer and small brewer colleagues in Iceland.
I attach some details about what is proposed, written in the “direct” style that anyone familiar with my work might reasonably expect. At this stage I am interested to hear only from members who wish to express a serious interest in going and want to connect to find out more details, via twbeerwriter@gmail.com.
