Earlier today we had the pleasure of joining with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to host a roundtable to discuss the experiences of operators on the challenges and successes associated with communication of allergen information for food sold in pubs and bars.
We had the opportunity to hear directly from the FSA on some of their current thinking on communication of allergen information for food prepared in pubs and restaurants as well as to share some of the perspectives and experiences of BBPA members to assist FSA in the development of their new technical guidance on communication of allergen information currently being drafted.
This is a vital piece of work to ensure that the needs and expectations of customers with food hypersensitivity are met and that any technical guidance works for those who work in food businesses.
In December 2023 the FSA Board recommended to government that they should consider introducing broader legislation for communication of allergen information, including mandating that this should be written rather than verbally communicated.
We will be keeping a close eye on the new Government and their priorities in this area and any steps they may wish to take in helping to better communicate allergen information, particularly where there may be greater emphasis on written allergen information.
Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association:
“Discussions such as the one that took place today with FSA allow us a vital opportunity to convey the experiences of our members in support of those customers who have food hypersensitivity and to ensure a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for those looking to explore the fantastic food offer in our great British pubs.
“We look forward to working closely with the FSA going forward in helping to develop technical guidance that works for pub workers and their customers alike.”
