Responding to the UK Government confirmation on how VAT will be applied to deposits issued under statutory Deposit Return Schemes (DRS), Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said:
“It was important that clarity was provided on how VAT will be applied to deposits given the proximity of the go-live in Scotland and a simplified approach should reduce complexity. It remains frustrating that VAT has not been completely removed from deposits and today’s announcement from HMRC creates yet further additional costs for producers in relation to the full VAT liability on unredeemed containers.
“However, with just over six months until the scheme is set to commence in Scotland, it is imperative that further clarity on outstanding unresolved issues is provided.”
