With pubs closed and social distancing measures in place, this year’s Beer Day Britain (national beer day) on June 15th is set to go ahead as a virtual celebration with breweries and social groups planning a variety of events on the day.
Purity Brewing is hosting an on-line quiz with questions set and asked by leading beer writers including Emma Inch, Adrian Tierney-Jones, and Jonny Garrett. Thornbridge Brewery will run a social media competition and offer a discount code for on-line shoppers, whilst Club Soda will host an on-line tasting of no & low alcohol beers. The Craft Beer Channel will present a live show on You Tube, and CAMRA is running an event with Jane Peyton via the Red On-Lion virtual pub with a talk and tasting leading up to the National Cheers To Beer at 7pm.
Confirming the virtual plans, Jane Peyton said “We cannot have the usual party in the pub this year for Beer Day Britain but we can still meet on-line to celebrate our national drink and never has it been more important to unite with a drink of beer and to say Cheers to Beer.”
The National Cheers to Beer entails raising a glass, saying ‘Cheers To Beer’ and then posting a social media message with the hashtag #CheersToBeer. The celebrations, led by the toast, have trended on Twitter for the last five years and Jane is hoping to make it six in a row.
“The public have been so supportive of their local breweries and speciality beer retailers during lockdown and Beer Day Britain is a good opportunity to celebrate the love they have for their favourite beers. I’d urge anyone, including my fellow Guild of Beer Writers members, who wants to support British beer to do what they can to mark Beer Day Britain virtually and show that even in lockdown, we’re united and longing to share a beer together.”
Beer Day Britain is on 15th June 2020 and the #CheersToBeer toast will happen at 7pm.
