Next week is dedicated to raising awareness of Coeliac disease (11-17th May). With more and more people abstaining from gluten in their diet, Denis Renty, founder of Van Bulck Belgian Organic Craft Beers, set about creating a quality gluten free lager to sit alongside the two-strong range that he developed in 2013.
Based on an old family recipe, the range of beers, including the gluten free beer, are now listed in Harvey Nichols stores across the UK. The beers have been developed in partnership with a brewery that has been brewing beers for seven generations and first began brewing in 1830.
Denis explains; “Having worked in the food and drink industry for over 20 years, I’ve always been interested in the trends and evolution of the industry. When I started in the business, restaurateurs would never have dreamed of pairing food with beer – it was always wine, so to see the introduction of beer sommeliers in some of the top restaurants over the last few years has been encouraging, as has the growth of craft beer.
“When creating the Van Bulck range, I was conscious of people who were looking for gluten free alternatives, but most importantly, tasty gluten free alternatives. I also wanted to create beers that could be enjoyed with a wide variety of dishes as well as being enjoyed on their own as a refreshing drink.”
Van Bulck Gluten Free Organic Craft Beer was awarded a bronze medal at the 2014 International Beer Challenge.
It is a light, clean beer with a light honey and walnut after taste. It is brewed using gluten poor and organic barley malt, resulting in a light and balanced flavour that accompanies a wide variety of dishes or is just as enjoyable to drink on its own.
The other beers within the range are Van Bulck Organic Blonde Beer and Van Bulck Organic Wild Fruit Beer.

The name Van Bulck is in reference to Denis’s mother’s maiden name. His mother, who is a renowned chef was born and raised in a small town called Watou in Flanders, known across the globe for growing some of the best hops used in the beer making process. As a child she grew up and played in her uncle’s family brewery where her passion for beer was born.
