The Czech brewery owned by the people of the Czech Republic are looking to crown the first Budvar UK Ležák Šampion
Budweiser Budvar are inviting UK homebrewers to brew and submit their best lager recipes as part of their ‘Stay-at-Homebrew’ competition. As well as winning the coveted accolade of Budweiser Budvar’s UK ležák šampion (lager champion) the winner will enjoy as a bespoke trip to the brewery in České Budějovice, South Bohemia, Czech Republic!
“Quarantine has been a strange experience for us all and has forced us to temporarily change our way of life. However, we must all remember that we are protecting the NHS and saving lives by staying indoors and remaining vigilant. For homebrewers, all this extra time spent at home offers more time to brew and we wanted to set the ultimate challenge – brewing lager!” says Managing Director Simon George
To reward sensible stay-at-homebrewers, the brewery is challenging them to brew their very best lager recipe and to submit samples for review. Lager is more a process than a style so the choice of beers available to brew is wide. Entrants can submit any lager recipe of their choice, as long as the recipe is using bottom fermented yeast or Saccharomyces Pastorianus to be precise. Once all submissions have been received, the samples will be thoroughly and fairly tested by a panel of qualified judges. Make sure you submit your samples by 12th June to the UK address provided to be in with a chance of winning!
The winner will not only be crowned Budweiser Budvar’s inaugural Budvar UK ležák šampion (lager champion), but they will also win a bespoke trip to the Czech Republic’s national brewery in České Budějovice! There, they will have the chance to talk beer with the rock stars of the Czech brewing world – the Budweiser Budvar brewmasters.
Think you have what it takes to become Budvar’s UK ležák šampion? ENTRIES NOW OPEN!

Editors notes
Founded by King Ottokar II of Bohemia in 1256, the city is the capital of South Bohemia and has been regarded as the home of Czech brewing culture for the last 700 years.
Every drop of Budweiser Budvar lager is slowly brewed in České Budějovice, or Budweis as it’s known in German. This makes our beer a true Budweiser, literally a lager brewed in the city of Budweis (not like other beers that call themselves a Budweiser, but that’s another story…).
So important is this Czech provenance, that Budweiser beer has Protected Geographical Indication status in the European Union, like Champagne or Cognac, meaning it’s illegal to produce it anywhere else.
Budweiser Budvar is proudly owned by the Czech Republic, a nation universally renowned for the quality of its beer.
