Buying a Christmas present for a beer drinker? The South East’s best independent beers have just been revealed

The best beers in the South East of England have today been revealed with the announcement of this year’s SIBA Independent Beer Awards 2023 – the UK’s leading beer competition judged by brewers, beer sommeliers and expert tasters.

The winning bottled and canned beers from the South East will now go forward to fight it out with the best from across the UK in the National finals, taking place in the New Year.

Gold (90+), Silver (80+) and Bronze (70+) prizes were awarded to breweries from across the region in a variety of beer styles; from modern Pale Ales and traditional Bitters, to Lagers, Stouts and Continental Style beers.

The South East’s Gold Award Winning beers, meaning they scored more than 90 out of 100 with the independent awards judging panel, were;

Little Swine – Hogs Back Brewery (0.5% Alcohol Free Pale Ale)

Pillars Helles – Pillars Brewery (4.8% Lager)

Halo – Hackney Church (5.1% Lager)

Pale Ale – Wight Knuckle Brewery (4.0% Pale Ale)

Tropical IPA – Signal Brewery (4.2% IPA)

Hazed & Confused – Loud Shirt Brewing Co. (4.5% Pale Ale)

Rising Giant APA – Long Man Brewery (4.8% Pale Ale)

Roadie – Signature Brew (4.3% Pale Ale)

Railway Porter – Five Points Brewing Co. (4.8% Porter)

The SIBA Bottle & Can Independent Beer Awards 2023 are judged by a fleet of expert judges from across the UK, with beers marked against internationally recognized style guides for the different beer award categories – looking at appearance, aroma, flavour, aftertaste and saleability.

Neil Walker, SIBA Head of Comms praised this year’s winners, “This year’s SIBA Independent Beer Awards Bottle & Can competition was our biggest ever, including seven regions of the UK and hundreds of individual beers. The expert judging panel only give awards where deserved, so the winners listed really are the very best beers in the region and would make superb Christmas gifts for the beer-loving person in your life.”

SIBA, also known as the Society of Independent Brewers, are the voice of British independent brewing and as well as the SIBA Bottle & Can Independent Beer Awards also run Regional and National competitions for cask and keg beer – all judged by beer sommeliers, experienced beer judges and perhaps most importantly fellow brewers – making these awards very much the ‘brewers choice’ awards for beer in the UK.
