Caledonian celebrates “Social” Cask Ale Week success

The Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh has declared Cask Ale Week a success following its social media-led tutored tasting night which attracted a record audience to the Brewery.

More than 150 drinkers, who like Caledonian Beer and its award-winning Deuchars IPA on Facebook or follow on Twitter, were invited to the Brewery to savour five ales under the instruction of Caledonian Brewery’s Craig Steven. @Caledonianbeer’s #CaskAleWeek twitter conversation reached a further 20,000 Facebook and Twitter users during the evening.

Blogger @TanyaTraveller tweeted during the event: “Great tasting & interesting to hear more about each of the five beers whilst at the Brewery!” whilst on Facebook, Jonathan Mann posted on the Deuchars IPA Facebook Page: “Thanks for a great tasting night by Craig and the guys. Cheers for the pie and a pint of Deuchars!”

Caledonian’s Managing Director Andy Maddock was delighted with the reaction. “We love talking with our Facebook and Twitter communities and we do it seven days a week, 365 days a year… but it’s great to be able to invite some to our brewery and indulge in the ultimate social occasion – a pint and a pie!

The interactive session gave our guests the opportunity to ask questions directly to the brewers whilst tasting five different beers. The tastings were shared on Twitter and Facebook so people who weren’t at the brewery could join in as well.

Interest in the event was so high we could have filled our Heritage Centre three times over!”

During the evening, attendees learnt about the history of beer and the brewing process as well as the specific characteristics of five Caledonian ales – Deuchars IPA, Golden XPA, Flying Scotsman, Caledonian 80 Shilling and seasonal brew Autumn Red. Whole hop flowers, still used at Caledonian in preference to hop oil or pellets, as well as black and crystal samples, were available on each table to see, smell and handle.

Local Caledonian fan Ronnie Neill summed up the event in his post-event tweet: “Had a fantastic time at the @caledonianbeer tasting night! Great hospitality! Lovely beers and pies #tutoredtasting”

Editor’s notes:

  • Caledonian Brewery was built in 1869, when Edinburgh was one of the foremost brewing centres in the world. This was due to the abundant supply of barley and mineral rich water from Edinburgh’s ‘Charmed Circle’ of brewery wells. It is the only surviving brewery of over 40 breweries that operated in Edinburgh during the 19th century
