CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, will today begin their Member’s Weekend, National AGM and Conference – this year held in the seaside town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire – during which they will vote on the future aims of the campaign.
Colin Valentine, CAMRA’s National Chairman, had this to say on the importance of the annual event,
“As a membership based, campaigning organisation, our conference is hugely important as an opportunity for our members to voice their opinions and bring up motions, which are then voted on by all attendees and subsequently implemented by CAMRA’s National Executive. These motions can be anything from how best to increase the popularity of real ale in the UK, to where CAMRA’s campaigning money and time should be best spent in the future.”
CAMRA are the largest single issue consumer group in Europe and by far the largest beer campaigning organisation in the UK, with over 160,000 members Worldwide, 1,200 of which have already pre-registered to attend the event – with hundreds more expected to register today and tomorrow.
Whilst the serious business of voting and motion-passing happens all day and is the focus of the weekend, there is another draw for members – a fully fledged real ale festival happening alongside. The beer festival offers brief liquid refreshment at lunch and then hours of merriment once the serious stuff is out of the way from 4pm. This year’s festival is set to feature 70+ beers, ciders and perries sourced from around the UK, but with a focus on local breweries from the Yorkshire area.
