Recessionary times have not dampened the appetite for real ales. Sussex has done well out of this resurgence with the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) reporting over 25 breweries now throughout the county.
Partridge Green based brewer, Dark Star, has increased its brewing capacity by 50% to cope with the demand for its wide range of beers. Originally known among beer enthusiasts for pale, dry and hop filled ale, it now produces a wide range of styles influenced by beers from around the World.
At the Champion Beer of Britain awards Dark Star became one of only a very few brewers to ever be recognised as the best in two different categories. Their American Pale Ale was best in the Golden Ales class while Festival was best in the Strong Bitters.
Commenting, Dark Star MD, Paul Reed, said: “It’s a great time to be a craft brewer and Sussex is a great county to be based in. I grew up loving the beers from Harveys and King & Barnes, and they set the standard for quality throughout the whole county. Our recent expansion will mean that we can start to consider supplying more customers throughout the south east without losing touch with our long standing regulars, some of which have been with us ever since our early days of producing a barrel or two out of the cellar of the Evening Star pub in Brighton. It was a hobby then and it remains so now – just a rather bigger train set!”
Whilst Hophead is Dark Star’s biggest seller, they have continued to defy categorisation, producing a wide, and often extreme, range of beers, from their 10.5% Imperial Stout to their latest beer ‘The Art of Darkness’ a 3.5% full-flavoured black beer.
2013 looks like being a busy year for the brewery as along with increased capacity, they’ll be continuing their close relationship with cyclists through their Spin Up in a Brewery on May 25th and Hopfest, a celebration of beer, music and fun returns on September 27th – 29th.
