Dead Chill. New research reveals that horror films are the go-to stress reliever for over half of Brits (54%).
A survey of 2,000 film buffs, commissioned by Beavertown, found that 54% watch horror films to relax, while 77% say they provide an escape from reality. Beyond helping them unwind, 41% of viewers are drawn to the suspense and thrill that horror films offer.
According to the survey, the genre is also seeing a clear rise in popularity, with a quarter of fans having discovered their love for horror within the last three years. These enthusiasts aren’t just occasional watchers either—on average, they consume 36 horror films a year, with viewership increasing by 53% during October.
Beavertown is celebrating this nationwide obsession with its Halloween film series, kicking off with a spine-chilling ‘Dead Carpet’ event at London’s Prince Charles Cinema. Horror icons like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Bride of Frankenstein strutted down a blood-red carpet, marking the launch of “Beavertown Screamings” — a week-long marathon of horror classics from October 23rd to 31st.
The study also reveals what keeps horror fans coming back for more. For 38% of Brits, it’s the thrill and suspense that make horror films so appealing, while 31% can’t get enough of the tension, and 27% love the sudden jumps and scares.
Iconic moments like Alien’s (1979) chestburster scene, The Exorcist’s (1973) head spin, and Jack Nicholson’s eerie “Here’s Johnny!” in The Shining (1980) were voted the top three jump-scare moments of all time.
When it comes to how Brits like to watch, there’s no one-size-fits-all. While 19% enjoy the thrill of watching horror alone, nearly half (46%) prefer the comfort of company to share the suspense. As for what makes a great horror flick, psychological fear (49%), creepy atmospheres (44%), and paranormal entities (27%) were the most popular elements.
In terms of all-time greatest horror films according to Brits, The Silence of the Lambs (1991) tops the list, followed by Alien (1979) and The Exorcist (1973). After watching these chilling classics, 39% of viewers admit to feeling spooked—but in a way that leaves them wanting more.
Beavertown is bringing these iconic horror moments to life at the Prince Charles Cinema, with spine-chilling surprises, live interactions, and a cinema bar styled like an old-school video store—all paired with a selection of Beavertown’s brews.
A Beavertown spokesperson says, “Halloween and horror have always been a huge part of our DNA and this year we wanted to take it to the next level by truly celebrating the nation’s love for all things spooky in cinema.”
“With our special screening, we are combining that passion with immersive out-of-this-world experiences that bring horror to life in the best possible way.”

About Prince Charles Cinema
Hello and welcome!
So who are we exactly?
We are The Prince Charles Cinema, the last of the independents still operating in London’s cine-famous ‘West End’. The site itself sprang to life as a Theatre back in 1962 before making the rather interesting shift to becoming a film-house of ill repute, which just so happened to host the UK’s longest theatrical runs of both Emmanuelle & Caligula! Then in 1991, the early seeds of The Prince Charles Cinema were planted and from there this mighty little cine-behemoth began to grow. We now find ourselves as one of the most popular Independent Cinema’s in the UK (if not THE WORLD!).
So what kind of films do we screen? To the uninitiated you may think we only allow the Back To The Future and Indiana Jones movies to reach our screen, but that’s merely the tip of the cinematic iceberg. In the past we’ve seen seasons dedicated to Paul Thomas Anderson run in the same month as an all-nighter dedicated to the Jurassic Park series (yes, even the bad ones). We’ve had Jacques Rivette & Ingmar Bergman ‘sampler’ seasons run alongside those for 007 and Studio Ghibli. Epic 70mm presentations of 2001 : A SPACE ODYSSEY in one screen whilst people Aca-Alonged to Pitch Perfect in the other. To put it plainly; we screen everything!
From cinema’s origins through to the present day, from all corners of the globe, and presented from a variety of formats including; 35mm, 70mm and Digital [which includes Digital Cinema Package [or DCP], BluRay, DVD, DVCAM and DigiBeta.].* If it’s a film that we believe our audience wants or would enjoy seeing on the big-screen, we’ll run it. Don’t see your favourite film in our listings? Tell us! But being the only independent venue in cinema’s busiest square-mile immediately makes you the underdog of the industry, which is why at a glance our programme tends to be a little different to what you might expect to see in the West End. We also have Ushers in our screens, something you don’t expect to see in cinemas in the West End anymore… but we digress.
