The British Guild of Beer Writers presents this event

in the Old Courtroom of Leeds Town Hall

at 3.30pm, Thursday 8th September

Choice is at an all-time high. Never has there been such an array of places to snack, eat, drink and socialise. From Thai restaurants and burger chains to coffee shops, tapas bars and beer cafes, there are more options than ever. The traditional pub which used to dominate the high street has been outmanoeuvred by numerous rivals. Or has it?
Industry analyst Peter Martin of CGA Peach will be presenting an overview of the beer and pub sector in the context of the overall hospitality market.

Then the debate chaired by John Grogan, former chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group will be on the motion:-

“This house believes that coffee shops, café bars, restaurant chains and take-aways are making the traditional pub less relevant.”

The motion will be proposed by will be Dan Murray of Leeds List  https://leeds-list.com/ and seconded by Anja Madhvani of Northern Monk Brewery. It will be opposed Andy Shaw, national director of CAMRA and chair of its Pubs Campaign, with support from Imogen Bennett of the Fox and Newt. You can fully expect a lively discussion, which will of course be opened to the floor!

Guild members, journalists, broadcasters and people working in the brewing, pubs, hospitality and off trade, sectors are extremely welcome. It is a ticketed event – to reserve your (free) place, please email frances@redflamecommunications.co.uk and s.w.jenkins@ntlworld.com with your details.

The Leeds International Beer Festival also starts that day – Thursday 8th September (trade session 2pm, public session 5pm) in the Leeds Town Hall. See: www.leedsbeer.com to organise your tickets for that.

Hope you’ll be able to make it. Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,
