English football fans travelling to Germany for the Euros are set to save on pints

• England fans will save around £1.59 per pint at the Euros in Germany compared to what they’d pay at home
• Those travelling from Switzerland will save a significant £2.44 per pint on average
• Fans from Georgia will lose the most money, with pints costing £1.95 more in Germany

New research has revealed that England fans travelling to Germany for the Euros this year will pay 31% less for their pints than they do in the UK.

Ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament which kicks off on Friday 14 June, research from personal finance comparison site finder.com has compared the average price of a pint across the competing countries, to find out which football fans will be paying more or less for their match day pints in Germany.

With the average pint price sitting at £5.17 in the UK compared to Germany where the average cost is £3.58, fans travelling to Germany to watch the tournament can expect to save an average of £1.59 per pint. This equates to a -31% price difference.

The biggest savers will be fans from Switzerland, where the average pint will set fans back £6.02 at home, £2.44 more than they would pay in Germany and a price difference of -41%. Denmark came in second place, with fans saving an average of £2.27 per pint in Germany, with a price difference of -39%.

On the other end of the spectrum, the fans facing the biggest price hikes for their pints will be those coming from Georgia, where the average pint costs just £1.63. Football fans travelling from Georgia can expect to pay £1.95 more per pint – a price difference of 120%. Those travelling from Hungary and Czechia will also face a pint price hike of £1.90 (112%) and £1.84 (105%) respectively.

Commenting on the findings, Louise Bastock, financial wellness expert at comparison site finder.com said:

“As the Euros come around, many England fans will be looking forward to cheering on their country with a cold pint in hand. However, with the average pint price reaching £5.17 in the UK, the Euro 2024 tournament could be a costly affair.

Brits travelling to Germany to watch the games can take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy cheaper pints and hopefully save or earn a few quid throughout their stay. If you’re one of the lucky ones travelling to watch a game in Germany, consider getting a debit card with low foreign transaction fees to keep costs down. You can also max out your holiday money by jumping on a switching offer (Nationwide currently offering £200), or finding a debit card that lets you earn interest on your current account balance (4.25% with Kroo) or cashback on your spending (Monzo).”

Methodology:

The data for each country was taken from cost-of-living sites Expatistan and Numbeo as of May 2024. The final values were averaged from the two sites.
