The Guild of Beer Sommeliers have now set out the programme to become a Beer Sommelier and details on how to qualify are shown on the Guid website www.beer-sommelier.org.uk
Apart from having the experience and the communication skills to become a Beer Sommelier the candidate must have taken and passed four courses:
- Cellar Management
- WSET Level 2 in Beer
- Beer & Food Matching
- How to Judge Beer and Understanding “Off Flavours”
The final part of the process is an interview to assess the person’s ability to talk and communicate about beer.
Alex Barlow, the Chief Examiner, said “To become a Beer Sommelier the person must be passionate about the subject and able to pass on their knowledge with enthusiasm. The thirst for knowledge for beer needs to be met.”
Paul Nunny, Chair of the Guild is also keen to raise the profile of the Beer Sommeliers, both within the industry and with the consumer. The formation of the Guild is the first step.

An accredited Beer Sommelier is a trained specialist in beer knowledge. They all have one thing in common; a passion for learning about beer and effectively communicating this knowledge to others.
The role of a Sommelier is to:
- Enhance the overall beer-drinking experience
- Educate Consumers about Beer
- Advise brand owners and retailers
- Promote the beer category
Acquiring this knowledge requires formal training and a dedication to self-study and only those that can reach the extremely high standards required can become accredited.
