Harviestoun Brewery responds to Tier 4 lockdown in Scotland

One of Scotland’s most awarded independent craft breweries has responded robustly to the latest Tier 4 lockdown in Scotland, which will see more than two million people placed under the country’s toughest Covid lockdown restrictions from Friday 20th November.

The move will see level four rules imposed in 11 council areas across western and central Scotland, including Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, West Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire, East and South Ayrshire, Stirling and West Lothian.

The new restrictions will mean non-essential pubs, restaurants and shops will have to close until 11th December, in what is seen by Harviestoun Brewery as yet another devastating blow to Scotland’s independent craft brewery industry.

Based at Alva, near Stirling, Harviestoun is a pioneering producer of ten high-quality craft beer and lagers, including its most famous award-winning beer, Schiehallion (pronounced she-hal-ion) pilsner, which is named after a well-known mountain in Perthshire.

“The Level 4 measures announced for significant parts of Scotland earlier this week are incredible damaging to an industry already on its knees.  This just piles on the pressure on Scottish pubs and the supply chains that support them.

“Not only is this a devastating blow to the trade, but with no insight to when the industry can open again, the sector will be unable to plan for the its busiest time of year.

“Harviestoun Brewery, just like all other breweries need a schedule so we can plan in and return to brewing for the pubs.  The Tier 4 announcement is of no help whatsoever in these almost terminal times for the Scottish On Trade.”

Harviestoun has been brewing in the shadow of the Ochil Hills in Clackmannanshire since 1983, so they were making craft beer in Scotland long before it became a popular trend. Still under independent ownership, they consider themselves a modern craft classic. Harviestoun’s beers are made with the soft local water and the majority of its barley is grown within eight miles of the brewery.
