Yesterday [Friday, 08 December 2014], John Keeling, Head Brewer at Fuller, Smith & Turner P.L.C., the London brewer and premium pub company, receivedthe prestigious John Young Memorial award from the London branch of CAMRA. The award was first presented in 2007 in memory of the former chairman of Young’s brewery and has recently been regularly presented by Torquil Sligo-Young, a Young’s executive director.

The presentation took place in the Hock Cellar at Fuller’s Griffin brewery and was attended by representatives from CAMRA, including London’s regional director Geoff Strawbridge and Richard Fuller, Corporate Affairs Director of Fuller’s brewery. Its aims are to publicly acknowledge an individual or organisation, external to CAMRA, which the London branches believe has done the most for real ale and/or pubs within the Greater London area.

In nominating John Keeling for the award, the Richmond & Hounslow CAMRA branch said: “John Keeling has been involved in brewing great beer in London for 40 years. He has won many awards for his iconic brews, which include ESB, 1845, London Pride, and the terrific session beer Chiswick, while also producing a range of seasonal ales which keep people coming back to Fuller’s pubs time and again.

Of particular note is John’s reintroduction and reinvention of old recipes such as those in the Fuller’s ‘Past Masters’ range. His championing of these beers and longer brewing times, in the face of other brewers simply brewing commodity beers in the shortest possible time, is highly commendable.”

John Keeling said of the award, “It is great for Fuller’s to receive an award of this stature and it is definitely an award for the team. Without the brewing team we have, we would not be able to continue producing our great beer. I’m also very happy Young’s brewers are here, showing that a universal alliance exists between brewers.”
