Nottingham-based beer event team, Let’s Beer, is working with Brew Day home brew supplies on Hop Idol 2024, Nottingham’s annual home brewing competition. Now in its fourth year, this competition invites amateur brewers from across the UK to take part in the competition, receive expert feedback on their beers and be in with a chance of some amazing prizes. As well as the adulation of their peers in the home brewing community!
The top prize for a Nottinghamshire-based home brewer is the opportunity to brew the winning beer with head brewer Jack Winter at Lenton Lane Brewery and the beer to be launched at the Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival in October 2024. Prizes available to all entrants across the UK include:
- A G30 Grainfather V3 – with skillful engineering and design, Grainfather systems allow you to create consistent brews at home
- Vouchers to spend at Brew Day home brew supplies
- Innovative brewing ingredients from Crisp Malt and Charles Faram Hops
The competition is open until 2nd June 2024 and will accept up to 100 different beers. Each entry costs £6 and amateur brewers can enter as many beers as they like. Full terms and conditions of the competition can be viewed here www.brew-day.co.uk/hop-idol-2024
Expert judging of the entries will take place on Saturday 29th June at The Gladstone pub in Carrington. Members of the judging panel will include representatives from: Brew Day, Let’s Beer, Lenton Lane Brewery, The Abdication Micropub, CAMRA, Nottingham Craft Beer Festival, Murphy and Sons and other breweries, pubs and bars across Nottingham.
Lucy & Alex from Let’s Beer said “We’re delighted to be partnering with Brew Day again to deliver Hop Idol 2024. It’s a great way to encourage excellence in homebrewing and connect the amateur brewers with the vibrant pro-brewing scene we have in Nottingham. And we really enjoy putting together the expert judging panel from across the trade.”
Matt & Andy from Brew Day said “Hop Idol provides an excellent opportunity for brewers to receive valuable feedback from judges and fellow enthusiasts. Supporting Hop Idol is a brilliant way to engage with the home brewing community and offer something back to our valued customers. We are really excited to see this year’s entries and hopefully we’ll see some unusual and experimental beers. Our advice is ‘Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries’. Good luck everyone!”
Jack from Lenton Lane Brewery said “We’ve had a great time being involved with judging the competition in previous years, so we are super excited about offering the brewing prize this year. It’s a great way to support the local home brewing community and reward a talented amateur brewer with the chance to brew in a commercial brewery and see their beer launched at our local CAMRA Beer Festival”

Let’s Beer offers innovative, beer-themed events and educational experiences across Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands.
From tutored tastings, speciality beers sessions and ‘Off Flavour’ training, to beer and food pairing events, Let’s Beer is a unique partnership encouraging everyone to build beer confidence. They also have a talent for gathering beer enthusiasts together for informal socials or planning beer-themed bespoke parties.
Run by Certified Cicerones (like a wine sommelier but for beer), Lucy Simons and Alex Downham, Let’s Beer was established in 2022. As well as organising and hosting their own events, they also work with local venues to encourage beer education and are the driving force behind the annual homebrew competition “Hop Idol”.
During the Covid 19 lockdown, the pair turned a long-standing passion for beer into an opportunity to get practical training for their palettes with Virtual Beer School. Self-confessed beer geeks, they are so enthusiastic about all things beer that they took exams in it and are now on a mission to share their successful side project with anyone who is partial to a brew.
