The team at Pellicle Magazine are thrilled to announce that the 2023 Fortnum & Mason Drinks Writer of the Year Award was deservingly presented to Will Hawkes for his work in Pellicle Magazine.
In addition, we would like to commend writer Adam Wells for his work for Pellicle Magazine, which led him to being shortlisted for the same prize.
Both writers have helped to form Pellicle’s voice from the early days of our magazine through their tireless enthusiasm and insightful, creative writing. Their work, along with work by many other exceptional writers, artists and photographers, is the backbone of our publication, and we are immensely proud to be a platform for such important, culture-hopping, forward-thinking food and drinks writing.
What’s more, it is extremely exciting to see drinks writing about beer reaching new audiences and winning awards, in what has traditionally been a wine-led space.
Having just celebrated the magazine’s fourth birthday and with talks scheduled at Fyne Fest at Fyne Brewery in Scotland later this month, Pellicle is keen to continue this work in the coming months and years, with a solid schedule of commissioned work by established and newcomer writers, artists and photographers on the roster.
Associate Editor Katie Mather says:
“As a tiny and independent team of four, this huge accolade underlines our major premise that great stories about food and drink are what’s needed in an increasingly cynical and suffering industry.”
“Will’s pieces are always so full of life and experience, with a clear emotional touch that breaks through commercialism and gets to the heart of what good food and drinks writing is: personal, relatable, real.”
“We are chuffed to bits for Will and his huge achievement, and we are very proud of him, and of our little magazine with its big voice.”
Will Hawke’s winning pieces can be found here on the Pellicle website:

About Pellicle
Pellicle is a magazine and podcast devoted to exploring beer, wine, cider, food and travel and the joy we find within these cultures.
Established in 2019 by writer Matthew Curtis (he/him), and brewer Jonny Hamilton (he/him), Pellicle is a website, podcast and (in time) a print magazine that aims to capture the joie de vivre we so often find within our favourite cultures. In 2021, brewer and writer Lily Waite (she/her) and writer and bar owner Katie Mather (she/her) joined the Pellicle team as Associate Editors, to further expand the magazine’s outlook and hone in on what is important to Pellicle as a whole.
Our collective ethos is about celebrating what makes modern drinks culture so vital, through insightful journalism alongside beautiful illustration and photography. All of our contributors are paid.
