Innis & Gunn Launch ‘The Original: PX’ Limited-Edition Beer

Brewer Innis & Gunn, known for its innovative, award-winning cask-matured beers, has released a special limited-edition of its flagship beer, ‘The Original’. This one-off beer sees The Original’s cask maturation completed in a cache of Pedro Ximénez sherry casks from Spain to create ‘The Original: PX’.

‘The Original: PX’ is a 7.4% Scottish Golden Beer, available from 16th August via the Innis & Gunn online shop – www.innisandgunn.com. Priced at £7 per 330ml bottle, the beer comes with a specially designed carton, making an ideal option for gifting.

‘The Original: PX’ was inspired by the long-standing love Scots have for sherry which dates back to the 1600s, when casks containing this wine from Spain arrived at the Port of Leith in Edinburgh, Innis & Gunn’s hometown.

With this in mind Innis & Gunn has finished ‘The Original’, its iconic single-malt-whisky cask matured beer, in Pedro Ximénez ‘sherry’ casks. Spending three months in these casks, brought to Scotland from Montilla Moriles in Southern Spain, the resulting beer, ‘The Original: PX’ is incredibly smooth and rich in flavour.

‘The Original: PX’ has an aroma of caramel and vanilla with hints of fig and jam, which immediately evoke thoughts of sunnier climes. Flavours of sultanas and Christmas pudding complement the signature malty, vanilla taste of ‘The Original’ and the finish is warming, with lingering sweetness.

To celebrate this special limited-edition, Scottish contemporary landscape artist Emily Moore was commissioned to create the artwork which features on the accompanying gift carton packaging. Painting in her signature style which uses contrasting layers, inspiration has been taken from the olive groves, so recognisable within the Montilla-Moriles region and combined with the architectural lines of the bodega roofs, patterns of the olive leaves and the natural wood of the casks beneath.

Dougal Gunn Sharp, Founder and Master Brewer, Innis & Gunn, said: “The importance of sherry to Scotland dates way back and of course, sherry casks are used to mature whisky thanks to their mellow-sweet character and array of exotic flavours and aromas. As our flagship brew The Original is uniquely single malt whisky cask matured, we were inspired to build on this historic Scottish-Spanish connection and mature our special beer, in those special casks, creating ‘The Original: PX’. Just as finishing whisky in these casks produces an incredible spirit, we have proven the same can be done with beer.

“For fans of The Original, ‘The Original: PX’ is a wonderful new way to experience this already special beer, while it will also appeal to whisky and sherry lovers alike. With its warming, sweet finish, ‘The Original: PX’ is a limited-edition beer to sip, savour and embrace with the changing seasons.”

Innis & Gunn’s quality beers range from their core portfolios to limited editions, each pushing the boundaries of brewing, using innovative techniques, ingredients and oak cask maturing methods. Innis & Gunn’s award-winning portfolio includes the premium Innis & Gunn Lager Beer and the brewer’s flagship ‘The Original’, a single malt whisky cask matured beer, which still stands unique in the beer market today.

‘The Original: PX’ will be available from 16th August via the Innis & Gunn online shop – www.innisandgunn.com – priced at £7 per 330ml bottle with gift carton.
