Innis & Gunn Launches Limited Edition Kriek 2023

5th June 2023 Innis & Gunn has launched Kriek 2023, a 5.1% cherry beer that offers a modern twist on the classic Belgian style and showcases flavour-packed seasonal Scottish fruit.

The spirit of innovation has coursed through Innis & Gunn’s veins since 2003, when Dougal Gunn Sharp created his revolutionary cask matured ale, The Original. This was a step-change in British brewing and introduced nuances of whisky cask flavour never seen previously in beer.

Since then, Innis & Gunn’s Cherry Kriek has championed a new Scottish fruit beer category, whilst other limited editions Islay Whisky Cask, the Vanishing Point series and another upcoming lager aged for 12 months will take the single cask maturation of Dougal’s beers to a new height.

With its recipe based on its award-winning Lager, Innis & Gunn Kriek uses ale malt, lager malt, naked golden oats and crystal malt, and with the addition of fresh and pureed cherries grown and picked under the Perthshire sun. The limited edition beer is then kettle-soured for attitude and to bring a zingy tartness to the sweetness imparted by the cherries and malts.

The final step is a short cask maturation using second fill single malt whisky casks to add further depth and nuance.

Dougal Gunn Sharp, Founder and Master Brewer, Innis & Gunn said:

“What started as a chance encounter a few years ago when we discovered burstingly ripe cherries growing a few miles from our brewery, is now becoming a sought after annual limited edition beer release. The cherry growing season is short, and we want to respect the seasonality and provenance of it by only releasing this beer in the summer.

“Many Belgian Kriek beers are brewed on a brown beer base, which gives a rich and almost chocolatey flavour.  I wanted instead to celebrate the fragrance of our Perthshire cherries – and we bought two tonnes of them for this year’s edition.  In this way, Kriek is based on our all-conquering lager and puts the cherries on the pedestal they deserve.”

Innis & Gunn Kriek has been cask matured to build layers of depth, accented with a balance of cherry sweetness, hints of oak and a refreshingly tart finish.  Showing abundant aromas of cherry, along with notes of vanilla, spice and wood – all of which pulls through into the flavour – Innis & Gunn Kriek offers vibrant acidity; the beer is clean, refreshing and moreish.

5,000 bottles will be available via the Innis & Gunn online shop at £3.00 per 330ml bottle.

Innis & Gunn’s beers push the boundaries of brewing, using innovative techniques, ingredients and oak cask maturing methods. Innis & Gunn’s award-winning portfolio includes the premium Innis & Gunn Lager Beer and the brewer’s flagship ‘The Original’, a single malt whisky cask matured beer, which is unlike any other in today’s beer market.

Tasting samples are available on a first come, first served basis and please find high-res imagery ready for download here.
