The International Brewing Awards is looking for a brewing historian to carry out research into the competition, which dates back to at least 1886.
The Awards are the oldest international brewing awards in the world and the organisers, Brewing Technology Services (BTS), are keen to piece together a comprehensive record of the competition, including photographs of medals and trophies.
The historian will be asked to find answers to questions such as: did the competition start in 1886 or – as recent evidence suggests – 1879?; why were ciders and soft drinks included and then excluded?; and were the awards initially for UK brewers only, or international from the start?
Ruth Evans, director of BTS, said, “We are extremely proud of our competition’s long heritage, but there are a quite a few gaps in our knowledge of it. With the Awards firmly established and entries from brewers growing each time, now seems the right point to chart a more complete history. We hope to have this in place before the next competition in February 2015.
“This must be a dream job for someone interested in beer and breweries and we look forward to working with the successful candidate to create an archive that reflects the proud history of the International Brewing Awards.”
The role is part-time, and will involve some travel to breweries. Ruth added, “We’re also appealing to brewers to let us know of any old medals, trophies or certificates that they may have on display or hidden away. It will all help to build up our picture of the Awards.”
