Jonny Garrett’s The Meaning of Beer Out This Week!

The fourth book by award-winning beer writer and chair of the British Guild of Beer Writers Jonny Garrett comes out this week.

The Meaning of Beer is an exploration of the incredible and often unseen ways that beer and brewing has built and shaped the human world, from inspiring civilisation and funding religion, to causing breakthroughs in microbiology and technology. While uncovering these stories he travels across the world, from St Louis to Qingdao, and Svalbard to Egypt – combining travel, popular history and drinks writing into one exciting, fascinating story of our species.

“The idea for this book came from the revelation that the first viable commercial refrigeration system was invented for beer,” says Jonny. “It got me thinking about what other great discoveries and cultural moments have been inspired by beer or brewing and as it turns out there are few that weren’t influenced in some way. Beer was once food, and is now the world’s favourite past time. It’s at the heart of everything we do, and I hope this book is as exciting and fascinating to read as it was to write.”

The Meaning of Beer is out via Allen & Unwin (Atlantic) in the UK and Hanover Square Press (Harper Collins) in the US on 7th November. For review copies, or if you’d like to come to the launch party on Wednesday 6th November please email Jonathan.p.garrett@gmail.com.
