September is upon us, and with it comes the return of one of Joule’s Brewery’s most anticipated and trusted seasonal brews – Calcutta 1757. But this year, it’s more than just another seasonal release; it’s a milestone celebration, marking a glorious decade of Calcutta beer’s reign in the hearts of beer enthusiasts. To commemorate this remarkable occasion, we’ve brewed something extraordinary – a limited-edition recipe that’s set to redefine your beer-drinking experience.
A Historical Inspiration
Calcutta 1757 pays homage to the legendary Robert Clive, fondly known as ‘Clive of India.’ Born in a neighbouring village to The Brewery, Clive went on to become a distinguished Military Officer in the British Army, securing the military and political supremacy of the East India Company in Bengal. His legacy began with the historic Battle of Calcutta in February 1757, a victory that inspired a series of conquests. Clive of India’s resting place is St. Margaret’s Parish Church at Moreton Say, Market Drayton, making this celebration even more special for our community.
The Rich History of India Pale Ale (IPA)
Now, let’s dive deeper into the fascinating history of India Pale Ale, the backbone of Calcutta 1757. Originally, IPAs were brewed in England for one specific purpose – to provide the British citizens living in India, as part of the colonial rule, with access to the finest British ale. The challenge was keeping the beer fresh during the long and arduous voyage from England to India. To ensure the beer arrived in optimal condition, it was packed chock-full of hops. These hops acted as natural preservatives, safeguarding the beer’s flavour and quality on its journey across the ocean.
Fortunately, our journey at Joule’s Brewery is a far cry from the lengthy sea voyage of yesteryears. Our dedicated dray team ensures that your beloved Calcutta 1757 arrives at your local taphouse in record time, so you can savour the freshness and the rich history encapsulated in every sip!
Introducing the Limited-Edition Double Dry Hop India Pale Ale (DDHIPA)
This year’s special brew is none other than the Double Dry Hop India Pale Ale (DDHIPA). Our talented team of brewers has meticulously crafted this beer, pushing the boundaries of flavour and aroma. By double dry hopping, we’ve infused brighter, more vibrant hop flavours and robust aromas into the brew. It’s a testament to our commitment to delivering craft beer without compromise.
Sam Riley, Joule’s Brewery’s Head Brewer adds:
“Traditionally we add the hops during the boiling process of brewing however with Calcutta 1757, dry hop goes in on the cool side while its fermenting in the tank. Dry hopping is all about the aroma and flavour. The hop oils that give off aroma and the fruity and spicy notes are volatile; they love to come out of the beer and that’s why you can smell them. But if they’re added hot, they come out too soon and disappear up the chimney. Double dry hop means different things to different brewers. Most just add in twice as many hops but it can also mean two additions of hops, one during and one after fermentation which is what we did with Calcutta. You can get different characters from hops by adding them at different times in the process.”
Crafted with only the finest ingredients, this light amber ale boasts a subtle aroma that beckons you in. The first sip reveals subtle hints of honey and spice upfront, a tantalizing dance on your taste buds. As you savour each sip, you’ll notice a light berry fruit finish that leaves you craving for more. Calcutta 1757 DDHIPA is the epitome of balance, creating an exquisite sensory experience that’s as refreshing as it is indulgent.
