Last call for entries to the Guild of Food Writers Newcomer Award

The Guild of Food Writers has created a new award for 2023, open to people who aspire to be food writers but have not yet had anything published on a paid basis.

“We want to encourage new food writers, whatever their age or background, and help them to find opportunities” says Guild Chair Samuel Goldsmith. “Entering the field can be daunting, and it can be difficult to know where to start on the journey to becoming a professional food writer. We want to help shine a light on emerging talent and reward the success of amateur food writers who are looking to take the next step.”

Entrants must submit a piece of food writing up to 1500 words, on a subject of their choice. It can be about any aspect of food – news-related, recipe-based, travel, memoir, review. It can have been previously published, but not paid work. Entrants must not have been paid previously for food writing, including sponsored content on social media. Entrants who have been paid to write in other fields are welcome to enter.

Submissions should be accompanied by a personal statement of up to 500 words, telling the judges about themselves, why they wish to be a food writer and where they see their career going.

As well as receiving the Award, the winner will receive a place on the Guild mentorship programme to help them to grow as a writer and find new opportunities. All the infomation about the awards and how to apply is available on the Guild website at https://www.gfw.co.uk/latest-awards. To give potential entrants more time to apply, the Guild has extended the deadline by two weeks, so applications must now be in by 14th February 2023.
