When the clock struck 7pm on Wednesday November 22nd more than 200 bottles of Bath Ales’ Sulis Christmas (5.6% ABV) festive beer were given away by the local brewer from its pop-up Lodge at the heart of Bath’s Christmas market.
Limited edition Christmas Sulis is a Bock style lager; a warming festive beer, sweet with hints of biscuit, flapjack and honey. To help get everyone even further into the festive spirit, free Christmas hats were also given out across Bath city centre in the lead up to the beer’s launch last Wednesday (22nd).
This year’s Lodge at Bath Christmas Market is being run in association with Framptons, the team behind the city’s acclaimed bar and restaurant. As well as a well-stocked bar, with Bath Ales’ award-winning ales, there is mulled wine and cider and a food offering.
Darren James, senior brewer, Bath Ales, said: “Having brewed this beer it was great fun to join in the celebrations and make a toast to Christmas Sulis on the Christmas market locals’ night.
“For the launch of Christmas Sulis, we drew inspiration from the famous J-Day celebrations in Denmark, when an annual festive brew is launched with much anticipation and celebration. We’ve put our own Bath twist on our version which is inspired by Aqua Sulis, the old Roman name of the city.”
Darren added: “We don’t expect the beer to stay around for long so get it while you can – when it’s gone, it’s gone. We hope to make Sulis Christmas an annual brew and an annual celebration event.”
Christmas Sulis is available in 330ml bottles. The limited edition beer is available from The Lodge and Bath Ales’ retail stand at the Christmas market for £3 per bottle. The beer is also available at select pubs and restaurants across Bath, Bath Ales’ online shop and at its brewery shop in Warmley. For more information, visit www.bathales.com.

Bath Ales was founded in 1995. As well as its award-winning range of beers, it also operates a pub estate across Bristol, Bath and Cirencester. In July 2016, it joined the St Austell Brewery family.
St Austell Brewery, which is one of only 28 independent family-owned brewers in the UK, was founded in 1851 and is known to be one of the oldest businesses in Cornwall. St Austell Brewery has committed to building a new multi-million pound brewery at the existing headquarters at Warmley, situated between Bristol and Bath. Work has already got underway at Hare Brewery which will more than double current production. Once complete there will be a total brewing capacity of up to 50,000 brewers’ barrels which equates to more than 14.5 million pints. New bottling and canning facilities will also form part of future expansion plans.
