Marston’s Takes Home Hat-trick of Awards at Prestigious Green Apple Environmental Awards

(L-R) Max Kanda, Manager Director of Novati; Andy Kershaw, Head of Property at Marston’s; Chris White, Energy Manager at Marston’s; Alex Rollinson, Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator at Marston’s

Marston’s has won three awards at the 2020/2021 International Green Apple Environment Awards* for their environmental work across both the Marston’s pub estate but also more recently their transformation in reduction of waste across the Brains pub estate.

The company was acknowledged as a Green World Ambassador for Best Environmental Practice and also took home a Gold [from the postponed Green World Awards] and a Silver from the 2021 awards in the Waste Management category for their work in reducing emissions from waste and overall waste to landfill across 145 Brains pubs.  The Silver award comes after Marston’s took on the management of 145 Brains pubs following the sale of these sites to the company back in February. Partnering with Novati, the team behind a ‘Best Environmental Practice’ award win for Marston’s back in 2019, the team took on a similar approach when reviewing the waste management of the Brains estate.

The Green Apple Environment Awards recognise and reward companies globally for their best environmental practice. The award win for the Brains sites comes off the back of a four-year project which was designed to maximise recycling and zero waste to landfill; a target which was met in 2018 by Marston’s, who became the first pub group to achieve zero waste to landfill.

Chris White, Energy Manager for Marston’s/Brains pubs said: “We are so proud of our team for receiving global recognition for the work we have done in reducing waste. We continue to work harder and harder to ensure that as a company, we are as environmentally friendly as possible and it is even more apparent now just how important that work is to help us lead a sustainable future. Our partnership with Novati continues to help us do just that, our mutual commitment to be fully engaged with innovation and technology has allowed us to transform our waste management for the better.”

Alongside the award win, Marston’s will have their winning paper published in The Green Book, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice.
