For the last few years the Craft beer scene has become dominated by the big flavours offered by the hop varieties grown in North America, Australia and even New Zealand. These Colonial hops present with floral and tropical fruit aromas, and fruity citrus flavours that the traditional British hedgerow varieties couldn’t match. Until now.
In 2013 Moor Beer Company were entrusted with brewing a beer with a brand new hop from Charles Faram Hop Developments (FHD). Only one brew was possible due to the small quantity of hops available from an experimental crop, and it was used to brew a beer called (with tongue very much in cheek) ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ but it showed well enough to convince them to plant a full commercial crop and to remain one of our most asked about beers in recent times.
In February 2015 we are pleased to announce the arrival of ‘Return of the Empire’ – our first beer brewed with the full crop of FHD ‘Jester’ hops including both whole leaf and pellet formats. It is a 5.7% IPA faithful to the Moor Beer ‘hop forward’ philosophy, with all the flavour and aroma that has made us one of the top rated brewers in the UK and around the World, but using just one English hop. The aromas are of Melon and Tropical fruit and the flavour intense and very different to those you would expect of a British IPA.
On the 13th of February, we would like to invite you to come and meet the men responsible for the hop and the beer, Justin Hawke of Moor Beer Co and Peter Glendinning of Charles Faram Hop Developments, who will be available to answer your questions.
