Nethergate Brewery Announces Exciting Expansion Plans in Long Melford

Nethergate Brewery, a beloved local business with a long-standing reputation for crafting award-winning beers and spirits, has submitted a planning application for an ambitious expansion project. The plans focus on the recently acquired eight-acre field adjacent to the brewery, a development that promises to enhance both the brewery’s facilities and the northern end of Long Melford.

The new site will help Nethergate Brewery tackle practical challenges, such as providing additional parking for visitors to both the brewery and the neighbouring Country Park, as well as creating much-needed production space. The brewery is also exploring innovative ways to utilise the space to benefit both the business and the local community.

Proposed features include:

  • A new café and a larger, improved shop and visitor Tap Room
  • A children’s play area, creating a more family-friendly destination
  • Environmentally friendly initiatives, such as an electric car charging station and a ground source heat pump

Rob Crawford, General Manager of Nethergate Brewery, shared his enthusiasm for the project:

“This is a really exciting new chapter for us. We’re committed to growing our business in a way that benefits our community and visitors. These plans not only address practical needs, such as parking and production space, but also present an opportunity to create something special that enhances the village’s charm and attraction.”

The brewery, owned by over 100 shareholders and supported by more than 1000 members—most of whom are local residents—has actively engaged with stakeholders to ensure the plans align with community expectations.

Nethergate’s planning application marks the beginning of what it hopes will be a transformative chapter for the brewery and the wider village. The team looks forward to working closely with the local council, residents, and other interested parties to bring their vision to life.
