The team responsible for CAMRA’s 2023 Champion cask beer of Norfolk are celebrating another win as it has taken the Eastern Region title of champion Cask Pale Ale (4.5%-5%abv) the prestigious Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) awards.
Moon Gazer Ale, in Hindringham, who brew the champion ale – Cheeky Jack – are now looking forward to it representing the Eastern Region in the national finals in Liverpool next March.
The brewery is run by husband-and-wife team David and Rachel Holliday, and David explained the team’s pride at the award:
“It is very rare for the same beer to hold both titles in the same year, so we are extremely proud that the consistency and quality of Cheeky jack has been recognised in this way by two very respected organisations.”
“We are absolutely thrilled that our Moon Gazer Cheeky Jack has been named the overall champion pale ale in its category – one of the toughest and most competitive beer categories We always knew it was good but to receive two accolades is great as it means that our peers agree with us.
The award is judged as a blind tasting by industry professionals and beer experts at the event each year and is part of an 8 region national competition involving over 1000 brewers. The eastern region awards cover 7 counties, with the category winners each going on to represent their region in the national finals.
Moon Gazer’s Champion pale ale is brewed using Norfolk Maris Otter extra pale which gives it a light golden colour and a sweet, biscuit malt base.
Starring alongside the Norfolk malt is a cocktail of US, New Zealand and UK hops as David explains:
“We use 7 different hops in total but all with similar fruit tones, so we create a balanced yet complex beer – and one which we think is balanced and sessionable – no need for in-your-face hops here! We wanted to create a rich, satisfying blend of mango, orange, pineapple, and peach flavours but one which also lets the malt come though as well.”
Moon Gazer also received bronze awards for their Nibbler and Scoundrel beers at the evnt which was held at Elgood’s brewery, in Wisbech.
