North, the independent Leeds-based brewery and bar group, are incredibly pleased to announce the sale of their original brewery site at Taverner’s Walk, Sheepscar to Tartarus Beers.
North started brewing at the Taverner’s Walk site in 2015, building on the success of their original venture, North Bar. Since opening North Bar in 1997, North has grown to a family of eight bars and a brewery, with new taprooms in Birmingham and Manchester opening later this year. During the Covid 19 pandemic North undertook a large expansion, renovating a former Victorian Tannery and building their new 21,000 square foot brewery and taproom, Springwell.
North has now moved all its beer production to Springwell, including their experimental side project Field Recordings, and are delighted to announce the sale of the first home of their brewery to Tartarus.
Tartarus Beers was founded in 2020 by Jack Roberts and Jordan Orpen with the shared vision of wanting to produce a range of high quality craft beers. They wanted to enter the market with a style of beers that they felt were underrepresented in the craft beer scene, particularly in the current UK market.
Their focus is on brewing Imperial & European beers, but they also produce a wide range of styles from clean crisp lagers, easy drinking saisons to full bodied stouts. Traditional styles of beers are usually met with a Tartarus Twist, with their latest invention being a Squid Ink, Seaweed & Yuzu Imperial Gose which was released to celebrate their second birthday. And if that wasn’t enough, all their beers are named after mythical creatures and legends, with each beer getting its own tale which you can read whilst you sip the creation.
The acquisition of the North site at Taverner’s Walk will enable Tartarus to increase their production, and launch their barrel ageing program. In addition to this, Tartarus will be opening a new on site taproom which will showcase their wide range of beers on offer, including special and one-off releases. 2023 will see the taproom host tap takeovers, events & food vendors in the hope to place the taproom on the map as a great drinking venue in Leeds.
John Gyngell, co-founder and director of North says
“It’s brilliant to see our original home at Taverner’s Walk in such exciting hands. The beer scene in Leeds has flourished over the past ten years, with an incredible group of breweries operating in the city. Opening Springwell has increased our brewing capacity enabling us to pass our original home on to the next generation of new brewers. We can’t wait to see what Tartarus create there!”
Jordan Orpen (she/her), Director & Co-Owner of Tartarus Beers says
“We are really excited to have our own brewery and taproom after we have been looking for quite some time. Finding the right location is difficult and we are very lucky that John & Christian thought of us as a good fit to take over where North Brewing Co started. Having our own brewery has allowed us to upscale production, bring packaging in-house and most importantly serve our beers in our very own taproom! It has also given us the capacity to move forward with a barrel project, which is something we have wanted to do for a while, look out for our first barrel aged beer coming soon! We are excited to get started and look forward to calling Taverner’s Walk our home. Thanks again to all of the team at North for supporting us through of all of this, you guys are ace!”
Tartarus Beers’ taproom will open on Friday 25th November.
Taproom opening hours:
Friday 5pm – 10pm
Saturday 2pm – 10pm
Unit 6 Taverner’s Walk Industrial Estate

North was founded by John Gyngell and Christian Townsley in Leeds in 1997. They opened their original venue, North Bar, with the shared vision of blending global craft beer and local breweries, interesting wines and spirits, great quality food, and eclectic music and art. North Bar quickly became renowned for its alternative approach, quirky style and excellent, friendly service.
They have since grown to eight venues in Leeds and the surrounding area: from Preston Bar nestled in leafy Oakwood, to the cycling hub at North Bar Social in Otley, to their slick city centre taproom on Sovereign Square. With growth has come a string of awards and accolades from the likes of Imbibe, The Observer, The Publican Awards and the Society of Independent Brewers. In 2015 they founded North Brewing Co, a global brewery with an independent heart, born out of a love of food, drink and hospitality.
In 2022 North will take their first steps outside their home county, opening their ninth venue in Birmingham, followed closely by a tenth in Manchester. Beyond a passion for great beer, North is built on creating communities of like-minded people, offering exciting and innovative spaces that are inclusive, friendly and fun.
