Citra brewed by Peterborough-based brewery, Oakham Ales, has been named ‘Champion of Champions’ in the Burton Mail’s annual Bottled Beer Awards. Gordon Tate feature writer of the
Beer-Ometer column in the daily evening newspaper, judged the hundreds of bottles supplied throughout 2013, from the best bottled beers offered through retailers in the Burton and South Derbyshire region. A panel of experts joined Gordon to select the best of the best and included an ex-head brewer and a regional ale brands manager.
Described by Gordon as “a stunningly refreshing, hop-tastic pale beer with a sharp grapefruit bite” he continued, “I recommend anyone who hasn’t tried Citra, to pop down to their local store and stock up.”
Oakham Ales was the first UK brewer to launch a single varietal beer using the Citra hop in November 2009. With a 4.2% A.B.V. (draught) and a slightly stronger 4.6% A.B.V. (in bottle), the beer was originally brewed on an occasional basis. Customer response was so positive, Citra earned a permanent place on the bar and in Oakham Ales bottled range in 2011.
Other accolades for Citra in bottle include winning ‘Gold’ in 2012 and 2013 in the International Beer Challenge and ‘Gold’ in its category and ‘Silver’ overall in the SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) East Midlands Competition in 2012.
Adrian Posnett, Oakham Ales managing director says: “It’s always fantastic to win an award for one of our beers, but particularly in a region where we are perhaps, slightly less well known and up against some really tough local competition.”
