Starkbierfest, Munich’s centuries-old festival of strong beer, is coming to London this February and March, offering Londoners a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Bavarian tradition. Known as the “little brother” of Oktoberfest, Starkbierfest dates back to the 1600s, when Paulaner monks began brewing a hearty, strong beer to sustain themselves through the fasting period of Lent. That is why it is referred to as “liquid bread”. This remarkable festival celebrates the rich, dark beers of Bavaria and the stories behind them, making it a must-visit event for beer enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike.
Munich Cricket Club will feature three specially selected Paulaner beers on draught Paulaner Salvator, the original Doppelbock that inspired the festival, Dunkel and Hefe-Weißbier Dunkel, each with their distinct characters, which range from deep malty sweetness and dried fruit to hints of chocolate!
In addition to the exceptional beer, the festival will include daily “Liquid Bread” tastings at 6:30 PM, where guests can learn about the heritage and craftsmanship behind these traditional brews by sampling the featured beers in an engaging and theatrical setting. To complement the beers, Munich Cricket Club’s chefs have created a festival menu featuring specially paired food boards, including Bavarian sausages, dunkel braised pork bites, pretzels, and a guest sausage arriving to the menu specially for the festival – the smoky Paprika Debreceni Wurst.
The atmosphere will be just as memorable, with a gothic-inspired Bavarian theme transforming each Munich Cricket Club location. Expect wooden beer barrels, flickering candlelight, and special bunting setting the mood, while staff in their traditional Bavarian outfits add a touch of mystery by donning dark cloaks for the occasion. The celebration will also feature a range themed games and competitions, including “Challenge the Monk,” where the most skilled participants can win a £300 bar tab and other unique prizes.
Starkbierfest will run from February 20 to March 22, 2025, across all three Munich Cricket Club locations: Victoria, Tower Hill, and Canary Wharf. For more information or to book your table, visit www.munichcricketclub.co.uk to book in advance.
