FLAVOURS TO DRIVE CONSUMERS TO THE CATEGORY AND INVITE CIDER LOVERS TO ‘LIVE AND DRINK WITH CORNISH SPIRIT’
June 2023; Cornish Orchards, the fastest-growing top-10 premium cider brand CGA 12 w/e Data to 13/08/22 & Grocery Multiples | MAT we 13/08/2022, is launching two fruit ciders that will help consumers to trade up and drive category profits for retailers this summer. Available now, Cornish Orchards Raspberry & Elderflower Cider and Cherry & Blackberry Cider have an ABV of 4% and offer the perfect accompaniment for the al fresco drinking occasion.
Offering a delicious, perfectly balanced, gentle sparkling cider made with crisp hand-picked dessert apples, the new Cornish Orchards flavours are available in 500ml bottles.
- Cornish Orchards Cherry & Blackberry Cider combines the sweetness of cherries with deep blackberry tones to create a rich cider with a mellow finish. It pairs well with apple pie with cinnamon & almonds or honey-glazed duck.
- Cornish Orchards Raspberry & Elderflower Cider has a fruity aroma of fresh raspberries, which complements the sweet yet delicate elderflower notes. It pairs well with jam doughnuts with a white chocolate ganache or grilled goat’s cheese salad with honey.
Raspberry & Elderflower will also be available in 30l kegs, while Cherry & Blackberry will come in 50l kegs. Volume sales of draught premium fruit cider have grown by 97% vs three years ago, delivering more than 11.4 million pints in a year. The segment has also grown by 119% in value sales vs three years ago CGA OPMS MAT to 13/08/2022 vs 3YA*.
Andy Box, Local Brands Director at Asahi UK, said: “Offering the best of British, we believe there is currently no super-premium fruit cider available in the market that delivers to the taste and quality of Cornish Orchards. Expertly made by our Head Cider Maker, Chris Newton, in Duloe, Cornwall the arrival of these beautiful, artisanal ciders will help pubs and bars extend their pricing ladder and drive category sales, while offering consumers a genuinely sustainable product.”
He continues: “Despite the growth in draught fruit cider, it is massively under-catered for in the on-trade. Consumers aged 18-34 have almost equal preference for draught apple (37%) and draught fruit cider (35%) CGA BRAND TRACK AUG’22. SAMPLE SIZE: 253. However, pubs and bars often do not provide a draught fruit option to satisfy demand. Stocking an apple and flavoured combination delivers a 20% higher rate of sale than two apple brands CGA (ON-TRADE), 12 WEEKS TO 13/08/2022 .”
“While draught remains the biggest opportunity in cider, with 74% of volume sales CGA OPMS GB MAT 01.01.22, we believe there is also an opportunity to premiumise packaged cider in the on-trade with fruit variants.
Packaged makes up 26% of total cider volume, but fruit cider makes up 74% of volume sales within packaged,5” Box added.
Cornish Orchards Fruit commands an average price per pint of £5.45, vs the average premium fruit pint price of £4.60, offering a great value driving opportunity to pubs and bars.
Supported by a new campaign for 2023, the launch marks the first time the brand will feature across ATL advertising platforms. In June, OOH advertising will showcase the new flavours across London and South-West England, and a 30-second VOD creative will follow in July on ITVX, Sky and All 4. In addition, the brand will showcase its food credentials with a partnership with digital platform Mob Kitchen, which has developed bespoke recipes using the brand’s cider.
In addition, the brand will offer 100,000 samples of Cornish Orchards Gold Cider this summer and pubs and bars will be able to promote the brand with PoS, such as branded coasters, bar mats and staff uniforms. New PoS items, such as parasols, ice buckets and bottle openers, will also be available.
Driving trial, the new Cornish Orchards flavours will be present at the Great Estate Festival in Scorrier (2-4 June), which has expanded its capacity this year to 10,000 people Music Republic Magazine as well as partnering with Cornish chef Ben Quinn to offer a bespoke dining experience, all offered in the beautiful surroundings of the Cidery for consumers to come along to.
The original, Cornish Orchards Gold Cider is made from 100% fresh-pressed apples and has a value rate of sale that is faster than any of the top-10 premium draught or packaged cider brands, with growth of 104% and 60.3% respectively CGA 12 w/e Data to 13/08/22 & Grocery Multiples | MAT we 13/08/2022. Cornish Orchards Gold Cider commands an average price per pint of £5.10, which is 31% higher than average (£3.90). It is also 15% higher than the average price per print vs premium draught apple (£4.42) CGA OPMS GB LATEST 12 WEEKS TO 01.01.22.
Cornish Orchards positions itself in the market with three pillars: ‘provenance’, ‘quality’ and ‘sustainability’. The brand’s mindset is to work in harmony with nature, which is ingrained in everything it does – from taking a zero-waste approach to cider making, to planting 5,000 trees on the farm and creating space for natural habitats where many wild species can thrive.

About Cornish Orchards
Cornish Orchards’ story began in 1992 when its founder, Andy Atkinson, started farming dairy cattle at West north Manor Farm in Liskeard, which is part of the Duchy of Cornwall Estate. In 1994, Andy planted three orchards on the farm as part of an apple scheme to protect and grow rare local varieties. Five years later, Andy blended and hand labelled Cornish apple juices, which became an immediate success. In 2002 the team made their first ciders. Today, Cornish Orchards is a passionate team of 35 staff who produce premium, nature soft drinks and award-winning ciders. Its ciders are made with 100% fresh pressed apples and use only natural sugars. They do not contain any artificial colours, flavours, or sweeteners.
