The Beer

February 2025: Orbit Beers White Label Series Rotbier 5.0% abv will be released on 3rd February 2025.

Rotbier is a malt-forward, German-style red lager (Rotbier translates to ‘Red beer’) that is designed to bring comforting warmth to the final weeks of winter. Launching at the beginning of February, Orbit Beers’ Rotbier is a celebration of tradition, inspired by the centuries-old brewing heritage of Franconia, Germany.

Tasting notes

Its deep reddish-brown hue is as inviting as its taste, offering smooth biscuit malt flavours, complemented by a light toffee sweetness and a gentle bitterness. Orbit Beers has added cherry ember smoked malts, which lend a subtle smoky quality reminiscent of glowing embers on a crisp winter evening. Delicate spicy and floral hop notes weave through the malt base, creating a harmonious and truly memorable drinking experience.

“We’re excited to add Rotbier to our seasonal lineup this year” Commented Robbie Sykes, General Manager at Orbit Beers. “It’s a beer that embodies the warmth and comfort we all crave during these colder months while showcasing the depth and complexity of German brewing traditions that we’re so passionate about at Orbit Beers. We’re confident it will resonate with both lager fans and those looking to try something new.”

The Process

To create this unusual style, our Brewers start with a base of high-quality malts: Munich Malt, BEST Special X, Cherry Ember Smoked Malt, and BEST Red X which give the beer its sweet, biscuity, slightly smoked flavours, and red/brown colour. Hallertauer Mittelfrueh and Pilgrim hops are added to provide a subtle bitterness that balances the sweetness of the malts. The beer is then fermented with Swiss Lager Yeast resulting in a clean, smooth finish that epitomizes the classic German beer style.

Where to buy

The Rotbier is available in 330ml Vichy bottles from Orbit Beers’ online store and Orbit Beers Taproom in SE17, where it is also available on tap.

Story

In 2012, Orbit Beers Founder Robert got in his campervan and set off on a journey to visit every single brewery in his native Scotland. It took him from the northernmost island in Shetland to the Outer Hebrides, the Scottish Borders and even his hometown of Dundee.

On a trip to discover great beer, he also discovered great people! And realized that the brewing industry was home to a wonderfully warm and passionate community that he wanted to be a part of.

With an overwhelming desire to start up a brewery of his own, Robert headed back home to South London to find a team of like-minded people who shared his enthusiasm for beer, brewing, and music. Bringing those elements together under the railway arches in Walworth, Orbit Beers was born and began to build its now award-winning portfolio of beers.

Team

Brought together by their passion for good beer, they’re a team of music lovers, vinyl collectors, DJs, and musicians with decades of experience in the brewing industry between them.

They moved into the double railway arch in the heart of Walworth, South London in 2014, and since then, they’ve remained independently owned and all their beers have been brewed and packaged on-site.
