Pellicle Magazine named “Best Independent Craft Beer Promotion” At SIBA Business Awards

Pellicle, the drinks magazine and podcast founded by writer Matthew Curtis and brewer Jonathan Hamilton, has been named Best Independent Craft Beer Promotion at the annual SIBA Business Awards.

According to SIBA—the Society for Independent Brewers—the award is given to “breweries, agencies or other businesses involved with the brewing industry who have shown innovation and success in promoting beer in either the on or off-trade, or both.”

Pellicle beat off stiff competition from fellow nominees: The Hop Forward Podcast and Brew York, thanks to its detailed coverage of independent breweries, as well as retailers such as pubs and bottle shops, which is aimed at a consumer audience.

Commenting on the decision to name Pellicle as this years winner, SIBA Business Awards Chair of Judges, Neil Walker, said: “Pellicle’s commitment to promoting independent craft breweries was crystal clear to all judges, and we particularly liked their approach of actively seeking out underrepresented voices. They have some superb features on independent brewers across the whole of the UK and we are delighted to name them as worthy winners of this prestigious award.”

The award comes as Pellicle approaches its third birthday, on which it intends to
increase the rate it pays its contributing writers, illustrators and photographers, across the board. This increase is being funded thanks to Pellicle’s readers, who support the publication via donations via Patreon.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have picked up this award,” commented Pellicle founder Matthew Curtis. “As a consumer-orientated publication we feel it’s a significant achievement to be recognised for our efforts by the industry we cover. It’ll give us a huge boost as we head into our fourth year of existence.”

Pellicle was founded in May 2019 by writer Matthew Curtis and Brewer Jonathan Hamilton, its aim to explore beer, wine, cider, food and travel, and the joy it finds within these cultures. In 2021 the publication added Katie Mather and Lily Waite to their editorial team, and has worked with over 150 writers, illustrators and photographers since it was established.
