A popular high street pub in the historic town of Maldon, Essex, is offering a warm welcome to visitors who want to stay overnight with five newly-refurbished rooms.

The White Horse Inn unveiled a new-look bar area last year, and has now also finished a stylish refurbishment of its bedrooms.

Licensee Wendy Jupp, who has been running the Shepherd Neame pub for three years, began refreshing the look of the traditional inn shortly before the pandemic hit.

She said: “We re-decorated the bar and just finished a few days before the first lockdown. I’d only shut for one day to get it done – and then we were forced to close!”

Now she has also completed a revamp of the five en-suite guest rooms, introducing a new, warmer colour scheme throughout, using creams and browns to complement the traditional wooden flooring.

Wendy said the en-suite rooms, which are all equipped with a range of modern comforts including a flatscreen TV and bathrobes, were always popular due to the pub’s location.

She said: “Maldon is the perfect spot to stay for a weekend away, close to the Blackwater Estuary, where the open water, mudflats and saltmarsh provide plenty of scope for walking, boating and fishing. We also get a lot of guests staying with us as we are conveniently located for a number of wedding venues nearby.”

She added: “We are really pleased with the new look of the rooms – our aim is to ensure that our guests enjoy a really special experience with us.”

The White Horse Inn offers a choice of ales and lagers from independent Kent Shepherd Neame, along with a selection of premium wines, spirits and soft drinks.

It serves food between noon and 3pm and 6pm to 9pm Monday to Thursday; 11am to 9pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 8pm on Sunday, offering a delicious menu of traditional pub classics and sharing dishes, with booking advised for the popular Sunday roast.

It is also renowned for its live entertainment on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. More details can be found on the pub’s Facebook page.

For visitors booking an overnight stay, a freshly-cooked breakfast is available between 8am and 9am, and all rooms are supplied with tea and coffee facilities.
