Pubs in THESE cities offer cheapest pints, study finds

  • A new analysis of the average cost of pints across UK cities has revealed which cities offer the lowest prices
  • Preston has been revealed to have the most affordable pints of any UK city – at just £3.07 per pint on average
  • Two Welsh cities place in the top five on the list – while the London boroughs of Ealing, Hackney and Croydon were found to offer pints under £4 for those seeking affordable options in the Capital

The study by QR Code Generator analysed the average cost of pints in Wetherspoons – one of the UK’s largest pub chains – in over 600 areas in the UK. The average costs of some of the country’s most favoured pints Carling, San Miguel, Guinness, Coors, Stella Artois, and Budweiser were analysed to find the cost by location. Shortlisting cities across the UK, the average costs across the range of drinks from 2023 were ranked according to the findings.

Taking the top spot as the UK city with the cheapest pints is Preston. The analysis found that the average cost of a pint in the Lancashire city comes in at just £3.07.

Not only that, but the most affordable of all the offerings considered in the study, Coors, comes in at only £2.49 per pint on average in Preston – meaning a round could be bought for a group of four and still have change from a £10 note.

The Welsh city of Bangor ranks second on the list. From £2.58 for a pint of Carling, £3.09 for Guinness and £3.61 for a pint of Stella Artois on average in pubs across the city – the average cost of a pint in Bangor was found to be just £3.08.

Also found in Wales, Wrexham was found to have the third-cheapest pints of any city in the UK, as identified by the study. The average cost of a pint in the city would only be £3.11, meaning nights out in the city could remain affordable.

Stoke-on-Trent places fourth on the list, but only marginally – with the average cost of a pint in the city costing £3.12. Even San Miguel, the most premium-priced pint analysed as part of the study, costs just £3.61 per pint – 21% cheaper than the average cost of a standard pint in London, as identified by the findings.

Sunderland rounds out the top five UK cities, offering the cheapest pints available. The study found that across all the drinks analysed in the research, the average cost of a lager or beer in the city’s pubs is £3.14 per pint.

London: The price of pints across the Capital

While London is notorious for having a premium cost for most things, Londoners, and visitors to the city will be pleased to find that there are some areas where they could find a pint only a fraction over the national average of £3.38 per pint, as found by the study.

The average cost of a pint in the West London borough of Ealing was found to be £3.46 in Wetherspoons pubs across the area when comparing the six favourite beverages considered – with a pint of Coors coming in as the most affordable at £2.79 on average. For those in other areas, it was identified that it is also possible to find a pint below £4 in Hackney and Croydon.

For a mid-priced pint, the study found that the average cost would set patrons in Islington and Greenwich back an estimated £4.11 or £4.70 per pint – with the latter at around 39% higher than the national average but less than 10% higher than the London average identified.

The most expensive prices are found in central areas and those often frequented by tourists, unsurprisingly. The analysis found that the average cost of pints in Camden, Westminster and the centre of London would likely cost more than £5 per drink. However, for savvy pub-goers, pint choices can make a difference and pints such as Coors in Westminster or Camden could cost an estimated £3.99 or Budweiser for £4.99 per pint.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO S.L commented: “The analysis provides a great guideline to where people may get the most for their money when heading out to socialise with loved ones. For those hoping not to break the bank on a night out, heading to cities like Preston or Nottingham where drinks have been found to average cheaper than others across the country, could mean a lower bill than typically anticipated. Making a trip to the pub even more appealing – especially as the summer sun lingers.”
