Royal Oak Paley Street hosts Beer & Food Evening – Michelin-starred food and award-winning beers make great bedfellows

The Royal Oak Paley Street hosted a gourmet extravaganza earlier this week [11 November 2014] with a five course meal matched with 10 beers, mainly from Chiswick brewer Fuller, Smith & Turner. Around 60 people packed out the pub’s dining area to be led through two beers per course by Fuller’s head brewer, John Keeling. Each beer was selected to accompany a range of exquisite dishes from the pub’s Michelin-starred chef, Michael Chapman.

From canapés of rabbit and oyster, through smoked eel, beer chicken and Montgomery Cheddar, to malt cake and caramel ice-cream, diners were encouraged to try both beers with each course and decide for themselves which one was their best match.

John Keeling said: “There are no right answers. I might be an expert in brewing but when it comes to taste, I am only an expert on my own palate.  Beers can complement or contrast a dish – and in any room, you will never get a unanimous answer as to which beer is the best match with a particular food.”

Nick Parkinson, licensee of the Royal Oak, said: “It was a fantastic evening and everyone was having a great time discussing and debating the merits of stout with smoked eel, Jerusalem artichoke with a beer recipe from 1966, and Belgian raspberry beer with malt cake.

“Michael produced an amazing menu for the night – showing off his culinary skills with food that not only tasted delicious, but was served up as a work of art on the plate.  We were delighted to retain our Michelin star recently and this was a great way to celebrate. We will definitely be hosting another beer and food dinner soon.”
