Salcombe Brewery Co. is delighted to announce that its Devon Amber has just been awarded a 1-star in the 2024 Great Taste Awards and its Seahorse gained the coveted 2-stars.
Jordan Mace, Salcombe Brewery’s Managing Director, comments: “We are incredibly proud of our outstanding brew team, led by Sam Beaman, for earning stars for two of our beers, Devon Amber and Seahorse, at these highly regarded awards. Our passion for consistently crafting top quality beers shines through in these accolades, judged by leading experts, which are testament to the brew team’s hard work, creativity and focus on quality.”
Award-winning, SALSA accredited Salcombe Brewery Co. produces a range of premium cask ale and keg products at its innovative Estuary View brewery which nestles in the Devon countryside above the world famous Salcombe Estuary.
Salcombe Seahorse (ABV 4.4%) is an amber ale with a name reflecting the fact that the Salcombe Ria is a haven for both British species of Seahorse. It is a sweet and smooth ale with a gentle hop character, hints of burnt caramel and a smoked malty finish.
Judging notes for Seahorse, which received 2-stars:
Rich for the ABV, this beer does indeed offer up caramel, spice, citrus and a hint of smoke. Its sweetness and bitterness are well balanced. The beer slips down smoothly, too, as promised by the producer. Clean and dry on the finish, it inspires further sipping. It pairs beautifully with cheddar, too.
This is a very good bitter with a perfect marriage of hops and malt. The sweet caramel note is welcome and not cloying, making it thoroughly quaffable.
Salcombe Devon Amber (ABV 3.8%) is an amber best bitter. This easy drinking malt driven bitter has a dry yet sweet finish.
Judging notes for Devon Amber, which received 1-star:
The beer has an attractive light copper hue. On the nose, the beer gives a tempting mix of malty toast and sweet caramel, with brown bread notes. There is an undertone of classic fruitiness from British ale yeast. The flavour carries through nicely, with a mix of caramel and toasty malt, alongside fruity esters and a pleasant, lingering bitterness. It’s crisp and refreshing, and leaves you with a moreish malty and spicy impression on the palate. A really tasty, well-made bitter.
Salcombe Brewery has joined forces with The Seahorse Trust to help conserve these amazing animals, donating 5p a bottle towards their work. This innovative brewery, which was established in 2016, is also partnered with the Devon Environment Foundation.
