Salcombe Brewery Co.’s Island Street Porter and Pilsner Recognised in World Beer Awards

Salcombe Brewery Co. is thrilled to announce that both its Island Street Porter and Pilsner have won a Silver in the recent World Beer Awards in the Taste category.

Head Brewer, Sam Beaman comments: “We’re incredibly proud to have received these awards.  It’s a testament to the hard work and passion our team puts into every brew. These accolades motivate us to continue pushing the boundaries of craft beer while staying true to our roots here in Salcombe.“

These latest achievements follow hot on the heels of Salcombe Brewery Co. being awarded a 2-star for its Seahorse and a 1-star for its Devon Amber in the 2024 Great Taste Awards. In the past two years alone, Salcombe Brewery Co. has received 30 different medals for the brewery’s range of beers.

In the 2023 World Beer Awards, Island Street Porter won gold in the porter category and was crowned overall ‘Country Winner’ too, meaning that they judged it to be the best porter in the country.

Island Street Porter (ABV 5.9%, 12 x 330ml cans £27.50) is a carefully crafted, velvety, delicately bitter porter with just a hint of sweetness. Eight different malts combine to suggest dark chocolate, coffee and black cherry, while the aroma pleasingly suggests Black Forest gateau.

Pilsner (ABV 5.4%, 12 x 330ml cans £26) uses the finest British malt and has a delicate floral and herbal aroma, derived from the noble Czech and German hops.  The gentle malt flavour complements the bittersweet palate, culminating in a crisp, dry finish.

The World Beer Awards spotlight the very best internationally recognised beer styles, awarding and promoting the world’s best beers to consumers and trade across the globe.  The Taste categories are based upon the commonly held beer groupings which define the style and process of beer production.  This year, author and beer expert Pete Brown headed up the panel of judges for the Awards.  Pete has written more than 10 books on beer, has been nominated for UK Beer Writer four times, and has judged beer competitions all over the world.

Great Taste Award winning beers – tasting notes and judges’ comments

Salcombe Seahorse (ABV 4.4%, 12 x 500ml £30) is an amber ale with a name reflecting the fact that the Salcombe Ria is a haven for both British species of Seahorse. It is a sweet and smooth ale with a gentle hop character, hints of burnt caramel and a smoked malty finish.

Judging notes for Seahorse, which received 2-stars:

Rich for the ABV, this beer does indeed offer up caramel, spice, citrus and a hint of smoke. Its sweetness and bitterness are well balanced. The beer slips down smoothly, too, as promised by the producer. Clean and dry on the finish, it inspires further sipping. It pairs beautifully with cheddar, too.

This is a very good bitter with a perfect marriage of hops and malt. The sweet caramel note is welcome and not cloying, making it thoroughly quaffable.

Salcombe Devon Amber (ABV 3.8%, 12 x 500ml £28) is an amber best bitter. This easy drinking malt driven bitter has a dry yet sweet finish.

Judging notes for Devon Amber, which received 1-star:

The beer has an attractive light copper hue. On the nose, the beer gives a tempting mix of malty toast and sweet caramel, with brown bread notes. There is an undertone of classic fruitiness from British ale yeast. The flavour carries through nicely, with a mix of caramel and toasty malt, alongside fruity esters and a pleasant, lingering bitterness. It’s crisp and refreshing, and leaves you with a moreish malty and spicy impression on the palate. A really tasty, well-made bitter.

Notes to Editor

  • Salcombe Brewery Co.’s Heritage range of traditional British cask and bottled ales were the first beers produced by the brewery. This range has developed over time with tradition, quality and provenance at the heart of every pint. Brewed to satisfy the demand for quality fresh real ale, the range includes Devon Amber, Salcombe Gold, Shingle Bay, Seahorse and Lifesaver.

  • Salcombe Brewery Co.’s Discovery collection of keg products has been created to meet the expectations of the ever-curious craft beer consumer. This rapidly expanding range includes Breeze, Salcombe Pale Ale, Salcombe Pilsner, Sun Drop, Island St Porter and Ocean Cider.

  • The surrounding coastal environment is hugely important to Salcombe Brewery Co. and is reflected in its seahorse branding. The Salcombe Estuary is one of the few places in the UK where you can find the rarer of the two species of seahorse and Salcombe Brewery Co. has partnered with The Seahorse Trust to raise funds to support these endangered creatures.

  • Constantly improving its sustainability credentials is a core objective for Salcombe Brewery Co. and as part of this ambition it recently eliminated all plastic from its packaging.

  • To support its innovation and rapid growth, Salcombe Brewery Co. has invested in an additional site in South Devon which now houses its own bespoke bottling and canning plant.

  • Salcombe Brewery’s range of beers is available nationwide in pubs and hospitality venues as well as retail outlets and online from www.salcombebrewery.com. It is available to the trade directly and through a number of key wholesalers.
