Sharp’s unveils Cornish Pilsner – Cornish brewer teams up with Eden Project to offer collaborative beer

From today, Sharp’s Brewery in Rock is offering beer lovers the first taste of Cornish Pilsner, in collaboration with the Eden Project. Following the success of Eden Ale, Sharp’s Head Brewer Stuart Howe has continued his fine work with Eden’s Horticulture Team, which grows the English thyme that gives Cornish Pilsner a distinctive flavour.

A pale straw beer with a herbal lemon aroma, Cornish Pilsner is brewed using Pilsner malt, whole Saaz hops and a Czech lager yeast. It is then layered with English thyme and more whole Saaz in a cold maturation vessel, before bottle conditioning.

Stuart Howe, Head Brewer at Sharp’s, said: “Cornish Pilsner is clear and satisfying, a refreshing reward for visitors exploring the world’s largest indoor rainforest at the Eden Project.

“Crisp and light, with clean fruit notes, you will find Cornish Pilsner to be a delicious aperitif and a perfect partner to shellfish or light spicy dishes.”

Tracey Smith, Eden’s Commercial Projects and Relationship Manager, said: “We’re very pleased to have worked with Stuart and the Sharp’s team on the new Cornish Pilsner and it’s great to have Eden-grown thyme which is an integral part of this delicious, refreshing new beer.”

The 5.2% ABV beer is available online, at the Sharp’s Brewery shop and the Eden Project in Cornwall.

This new beer from Sharp’s follows the launch of the Connoisseurs Choice range, limited edition premium bottled beers designed to partner quality food.

About Sharp’s Brewery Ltd

Founded in 1994, Sharp’s Brewery is a modern brewer of cask conditioned beer based at Rock in Cornwall and has grown rapidly to become the largest brewer of cask beer in the South West and the owner of one of the UK’s fastest growing cask beer brands, Doom Bar.

Sharp’s beer is brewed exclusively using just British malted barley, whole hop flowers, Sharp’s own yeast and Cornish water. The brewery at Rock is one of the UK’s most sustainable and is an industry leader with a water to beer conversion ratio of just 2.8 litres per litre of beer compared to an industry average of 7 litres of water per litre of beer made. In 2011 Sharp’s increased employment at its Rock Brewery by 18%.

This year, Sharp’s won six medals at the International Beer Challenge Awards, adding to those won by Doom Bar and Monsieur Rock in 2011. Sharp’s Special and Chalky’s Bite were crowned in the best pale ale categories at the World Beer Awards in 2011 and Sharp’s Head Brewer, Stuart Howe, was also named All Party Parliamentary Beer Group Brewer of the Year.
