TRAINING COURSES FROM THE GUILD

Places are still available on the two training courses running later this year. The Guild has organised these as part of our objective of offering more benefits to our members, and we are subsidising them both to make them more affordable for you.

‘Pitch & Deal’ is designed for freelance writers/broadcasters/photographers/PRs and others who want to secure more work, at a better rate of pay. The course is run by experienced NUJ trainers and we are scheduling it for a Saturday in response to feedback from potential attendees who still have a ‘day job’ during the week.

‘How to Judge Beer’ is run by the Beer Academy and is ideal for members looking to advance their beer appreciation skills and gain a recognised qualification.  It is run by Alex Barlow, the Beer Academy’s director of training, Master Brewer and founder of Sentinel Brewing Co in Sheffield.

Please review the course details below and consider whether one, or both, could help you in your career as a beer communicator – as well as being an opportunity to network with other Guild members.  We’d also welcome feedback on other training that you’d like to see offered by the Guild.

To book a place or find out more about either of these courses, please email secretary@beerguild.co.uk

PITCH AND DEAL

DATE:                       Saturday 1 April 2017

TIME:                       10.00am – 3.00pm

VENUE:                   The Admiralty, 66 Trafalgar Square, London, WC2N 5DS

COST:                      £50 (inc VAT)

Course details

This course focuses on how to pitch your ideas to editors and pitch yourself and your services (copywriting, photography, PR) to any potential client.  And then, importantly, how to negotiate your fees (including how to ask for and get more money), and how to hold on to your copyright, aka negotiating usage.

This is an intensive course using role play and places are limited. Ideally, you should come equipped with either an idea for an article that you want to pitch, along with potential publications/companies you’d think suitable to pitch it at,  or a service/services you want to sell and clients you’d want to pitch it at.

HOW TO JUDGE BEER

TIME:                                      1.00 – 5.00 pm

VENUE:                                  Institute of Brewing & Distilling, 44A Curlew Street, Butler’s Wharf, London SE1 2ND

COST:                                      £60 (inc VAT)

Course details

This course is designed to increase understanding of how to assess and judge the quality and style of a beer. It enhances the experience and enjoyment of tasting beer as well as preparing judges in beer competitions for the processes and standards required.   It will develop delegates’ understanding and correct use of beer terminology; awareness of inappropriate flavour characteristics, through tasting of ‘flavour spiked’ beer samples; ability to identify key beer styles and to discriminate amongst beers of the same style.

It enables delegates to:  assess and accurately communicate beer characteristics; identify key flavour faults within beers; guide others and make good beer choices and to judge beers against appropriate style criteria to select a worthy winner.

Delegates will sit the How to Judge Beer examination at the end of the course.
