Fremantle in Western Australia is the birthplace of craft brewing in Australia. Tourism Western Australia have released a short film following Brit winner of Best Jobs in the World, Rich Keam on a Freo Beer Crawl. Led by Champion Brewer Brendan Varis of Feral Brewing Company it celebrates the brewers, breweries and pubs that gave birth to a vibrant brewing culture.

Home to Aussie beer icon Little Creatures, Rich is featured getting hands on in their harbourside brewhouse, with Brewer, Andy Scade. The Sail and Anchor pub, where Australian craft brewing is credited to have begun makes an appearance as the place that inspired Brendan Varis and a raft of brewers. Beer chef Gerard “Mitch” Mitchell gives a tasting of his Brewer’s Board, a selection of wort cured Beef, Hop Honey and Cheeses made with Rauch beer (from The Monk brewpub) and another with Feral Brewing’s award winning Hop Hog. Clancy’s Fish Pub, a staunch supporter of local WA brewing provides the closing location.

Rich Keam comments: Aussie beer has been associated with the big name brands we get in the UK but the depth of quality in the Australian Craft scene rivals is a real eye opener. WA has brewing from the north in Broome at Matso’s to the Southern Ocean coast at Albany, 1600 miles away. A vast state with a vast array of brewing.

 NOTES:

Rich Keam is originally from Portsmouth, UK. He was one of 1000s of entrants to Tourism Australia’s Best Jobs in the World campaign.  He arrived in Perth in August 2013 to take up his prize job as Taste Master of Western Australia. Brendan Varis is the head brewer and owner of Feral Brewing Co, one of Australia’ s top craft breweries. Their award winning beers started out life in the Swan Valley just outside Perth. The original Brewpub still stands on the site, producing quality craft beers, in addition to a larger production brewery in nearby Bassendean.
