Yorkshire coast brewery wins international beer awards

Kate Balchin with gold medal winning Landmark Lager

The team at a Yorkshire Wolds brewery is celebrating after winning three awards at the International Beer Challenge (IBC) 2021.

Wold Newton based Wold Top’s Landmark Lager won a gold award in the Lagers category; Benchmark Session IPA won a silver award in the Ales category and Barrel Wave barrel-aged IPA won a bronze award in the Speciality Beers Category in the global competition that was judged by 70 industry experts.

“All three beers are relatively new additions to our range and the awards are testament to the skill and commitment of our brew team,” said Wold Top’s director, Kate Balchin.

“We’re particularly proud of the fact that Landmark Lager was one of only 18 gold medal winning beers in the Lager category that attracted 113 entries.”

The new beers have already achieved success in brewing awards, with the brewery’s first lager, Landmark Lager winning a silver award at the SIBA Regional Digital Beer Awards 2020 and both Barrel Wave and Benchmark winning awards at the World Beer Awards 2021.

Landmark Lager, 4.2% vol. is a British Lager with notes of honey, herbs and lemon, together with lightly toasted malts. Barrel Wave, 9.2% is a barrel-aged beer brewed in collaboration with Wold Top’s sister company, Spirit of Yorkshire and Benchmark, 4.2%, is a highly hopped Session IPA.

The award-winning beers are available online at woldtopbrewery.co.uk and from specialist independent retailers throughout the UK.

Brewers from across the globe won a collective 487 medals at the event, which was launched 25 years ago by Drinks Retailing magazine. This year judges awarded 74 gold medals, 189 silvers and 224 bronzes.

IBC Chairman, Jeff Evans said: “This year’s International Beer Challenge was a particularly enlightening experience for the judges. I’m quite used to hearing that the standard of entries gets better every year, which reflects the development of the beer industry over the last decade, but this year it was remarkable how many judges actually made that comment. The fact that the judges awarded more gold medals than ever before backed this up, too. Something really positive is going on in the brewing industry, despite the trials of the last year or so.”

Wold Top Brewery was founded by in 2003 and is located on the Mellor family farm at Hunmanby Grange. The team use home grown barley and water from the farm’s borehole to produce a range of award-winning cask, keg and bottled beers that are available throughout Yorkshire and nationwide.
