Bays Brewery takes top industry award

Glasses are being raised today at Bays Brewery following the brewery’s triumph in the National Business Awards 2014, run by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), to which the local brewer belongs.

Bays Brewery was named as winner of the ‘Best Green Business Award’ at SIBA’s BeerX event, held in Sheffield. Bays was praised for it’s environmentally friendly approach to brewing – which includes a recent £30,000 investment into solar power, and it’s use of local suppliers which has helped the brewery to signifantly reduce it’s carbon footprint.

Peter Salmon, Director at Bays said:  “We pride ourselves on our Green credentials, so it is wonderful to receive this award through recognition from our peers and industry experts. We are currently working on a number of other environmental initiatives within the brewery to put us at the forefront of our industry. We believe this is an area that all businesses need to be working on as there really should be no excuses for not protecting our environment.”

Presenting the Awards, Julian Growcock of SIBA said, “The SIBA Business Awards have been running for nine years and in that time the number of brewers within our ranks has multiplied to the point where today, we have close to 800 members.

“We are, once again, impressed with the very high standard of entries to the Business Awards, which demonstrates that what our members may lack in size, they more than make up for in their professionalism and commitment to their business.

“With talented and dedicated individuals like Bays Brewery at the forefront of local brewing, we should be optimistic about the prospects for the sector.”

Notes to editor:

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) was founded in 1980 to represent the UK’s smaller, independent breweries. Today it has close to 800 brewer members, on whose behalf it lobbies at Westminster and in Europe. SIBA campaigned for the ‘penny in the pint’ reduction in beer duty introduced in the 2013 Budget – the first cut in beer duty since 1959.

BeerX was held for the first time in 2013, bringing together SIBA’s AGM, annual conference and the judging and announcement of winners in its National Beer Competition. The success of last year’s event ensured its return this March.
